What Is Local SEO and Why Is it Important?

Local SEO is a type of search engine marketing that involves optimizing your business website and online profiles for local search. It’s a method for ranking your website for geo-specific searches so your site gets found by users searching for local businesses like yours.

If you’re a dentist in San Diego,CA and a user searches for “San Diego dentist”, you want to rank for this keyword in the Google search results so you can grab this user’s attention and, hopefully, turn them into a new client.

But ranking in local search doesn’t always happen naturally.

You need a local SEO strategy that’s based on what your target audience is looking for, which keywords seem like the best fit for your site, and what methods your competitors are using to outrank you. Then, you can employ a variety of local SEO tactics to rise above the competition and attract new local customers to you.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Local SEO focuses on optimizing a business’s online presence to attract more customers from relevant local searches. It targets geographically-specific search queries and aims to make a business visible in local search results, such as Google Maps and local pack listings.

Regular SEO, on the other hand, aims to improve a website’s visibility on a broader scale, targeting national or global search queries without a specific geographical focus.

For example, let’s say a Google user in NY, a search for “best pizza near me” would trigger local SEO efforts, showing nearby pizza places with ratings and distance throughout NY. In contrast, a search for “how to make pizza” would bring up websites, blogs, and videos optimized through regular SEO practices, providing general information without any local emphasis.

Organic Search Results vs. Local Search Results

Organic search results are listings on a search engine results page (SERP) that appear because of their relevance to the search terms, as determined by the search engine’s algorithms. These results are not influenced by location and are typically found below the paid ads and local search results.

Local search results, on the other hand, are specifically tailored to the searcher’s geographic location and appear prominently in the local pack at the top of the SERP. These results often include business names, addresses, phone numbers, and reviews.

For example, in a Florida SERP, a search for “digital marketing agency” might bring up organic search results with nationwide or global marketing firms’ websites, articles, and blogs. However, a search for “digital marketing agency in Miami” will generate local search results highlighting Miami-based agencies, complete with their contact information, reviews, and location on Google Maps.
