New and potential clients often ask us about the suitable time to update their SEO Plan, especially those who have seen a recent decline of important organic website traffic, as we’re a digital marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) agency.
But even if you don’t lose traffic, you can always try updating your SEO plan to gain more traffic. However, many businesses mistakenly consider SEO a one time task and miss out on this potential traffic.
But it shouldn’t be that way.
SEO of a website is exactly like keeping our body healthy with a balanced diet or fitness.
Just because you do a workout or eat a salad does not mean you are going to be healthy.
And you will have to be consistent with your healthy eating and exercise to see positive results. The target stakes always shift because Google makes small changes to its search ranking algorithm every day.
You have to work on your SEO regularly in order to keep up with these changes.
That’s why you can never have a bad time to update your SEO plan. It doesn’t require you to update it every day. But making micro–strategic adjustments as often as every two weeks wouldn’t be wasted effort.
This is just one example of dynamic SEO.
Not every business has the resources or time to devote to their SEO strategy.
Here, I’ve outlined the best times to update your SEO plan to help you make the most out of your digital marketing budget.
The fact is, as a few fake SEO experts will say, there’s no shortcut to the top of Google.
Just like running a marathon or climbing a mountain, it takes effort to succeed.
It is for this very reason that trustworthy digital marketing professionals (like us) advise clients to stick with a strategy for 6 to 12 months to start seeing the results.
That said, it can take up to 12 months, but you should begin to see positive signs after 6 months.
You’re actually not supposed to rank in the top 10 at least within the first 6 months, but you should see your keywords jump up in rankings (for instance, from 50th to 20th place).
If you have not seen these marginal gains, it’s highly unlikely that your SEO plan is not failing.
In this case, you have to either update it or hire a new SEO agency.
As I mentioned previously, Google hunts and knocks here to regularly make micro-improvements to its search algorithm.
Apart from those small updates, they sometimes introduce major updates.
Core Updates are these bigger updates that change the rules of search. Doing this can change the way your site ranks on Google.
For example, some say that a particularly disruptive update cost Leaf Group (formerly Demand Media, Inc) $6.4 million in lost website traffic.
To put it simple, if your web page doesn’t satisfy the brand new Core Update rules, Google might penalize you.
However, whenever they release an update, you would have to reorganize your SEO plan.
Do you plan to reposition your brand, launch a new type of product, or introduce a new service?
If your answer is yes, you will have to update your SEO plan.
Here’s why:
For example, you are running a skincare brand and until now, your only product has been moisturizers.
As your business continues to grow you have decided to add shampoo to your catalog.
If you don’t adapt your SEO plan to take into account this new type of product, then you could potentially fail to gain popularity in search term traffic that relates to shampoo.
Also, repositioning your brand or launching a new service generates dozens of new opportunities for search terms.
All these possibilities should be included in your SEO plan.
Failing to fold these potential new conditions into the equations, however, means things might continue on as they have.
You’ll definitely not be able to make up for the lost growth opportunities.
Now that we’ve covered what is essential when updating your SEO plan, get ready to learn the correct times.
But if you want SERP success, you should update your SEO plan at least every 6 months.
Consider all Google Core Updates or business development actions you do.
However, and it’s better to do that every 1-3 months in order to check whether SEO landscape requires updating and editing the current SEO plan or re think the SEO strategy.
It doesn’t mean that you can’t have a general strategic goal as gaining [x] amount of traffic or acquiring [x] number one keyword within a longer amount of time (e.g. 12 months).
This does not, however, mean you shouldn’t be prepared to adjust your strategic approach as needed.
Okay, so it’s time for another example.
Suppose that your current SEO plan covers 12 months and focuses on keyword research. So, if two months into your plan, Google comes with a Core Update that spotlights sites loading fast, you should update the plan to include this.
At the end of the 12 months, even though you tried everything in your power, your search results have started to deteriorate since you did not tweak your plan to cater to the new changes, and so Google penalized you for it.
The competitors, who adjusted their tactics in line with the Core Update, occupied top search positions. Had you updated your plan after 3 or even 6 months, you could have adjusted your strategy and had averted a drop in rankings.
Just as you don’t ‘need’ a builder to build your extension, you don’t ‘need’ an SEO agency to optimise your website.
But if you’re looking for the best results (like your winter garden not collapsing or a website that ranks well on Google) it’s sensible to get some professional help.
One is that an SEO agency gives you the skills you need to win the fight with search.
Furthermore, hiring an online freelancer is often a much smarter choice than hiring somebody in house because you get access to multiple highly trained professionals at discount rates.
And second, agencies employ specialists who stay on top of search trends. As a result, agencies are well suited to regularly adjust your SEO plan to these trends.
So, this results in better keyword rankings for you.
The mission of Google is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
This task is endless and will need countless algorithm updates to achieve. Google will prefer agile businesses that can quickly adapt their websites, content, and SEO plans to these ever changing requirements.
Therefore, it’s essential that you keep on updating your SEO plan so that you can stand out. Is it time to update your SEO Plan? We’d love to chat. To get in touch, click this link.
